Certification Director

The Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA), a voluntary statewide professional association for attorneys and other law-related professionals, has an opening for a Certification Director.  The goal of the MSBA certification program is to assist members with differentiating themselves and marketing their practice to the public. Certification programs serve a public function by enhancing public access to qualified practitioners. These programs provide assurance that the specialist has been found to possess the expertise, experience, and knowledge necessary to provide quality service.

The Certification Director represents the MSBA in a professional manner and promotes and manages all aspects of the following MSBA legal specialist certification programs: Civil Trial Law, Criminal Law, Labor & Employment Law, Real Property Law.  The successful candidate will be autonomous, action oriented, and adaptable.

This is a part-time non-exempt position.  The Minnesota State Bar Association is an equal opportunity employer.

Primary Functions
  • Initiates internal and external activities to define and promote legal specialist certification
  • Maintains uniform and central administration program system
  • Maintains all attorney certification files and database records
  • Administers the attorney certification applications, audits, examinations and recertification process and files
  • Maintains all aspects of certification billing system
  • Ensures compliance with the requirements of the State Board of Legal Certification
  • Prepares and submits all required reports and payments to the State Board of Legal Certification
  • Assigns certification credits for CLEs and maintains approved course postings on the website
  • Provides general information regarding the MSBA’s certification programs as necessary
  • Reviews and maintains certification information on website
  • Drafts and manages all certification program forms
  • Manages quarterly certification billings
  • Arranges and attends certification board meetings, including preparation and distribution of agenda and minutes, and supporting materials
  • Provides administrative assistance to certification councils
  • Provides administrative assistance for specified meetings
  • Assists with certification examination, preparation and proctoring
  • Maintains contact with section representatives seeking to become a certifying agency
  • Develops annual certification program budget
  • Networks with other Certification directors/managers
  • Submits the Board of Legal Certification’s application for each section seeking to become a certifying agency; presents to the MSBA Assembly and Board of Legal Certification for consideration
  • Prepare all press releases for newly certified specialists and recertified specialists
Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite products
  • Adept at working with databases, knowledge of Aptify database a plus
  • Work collaboratively and independently

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects with similar and competing deadlines
Supervisory Responsibilities

The Certification Director supervises the Certification Coordinator.

Working Conditions

The person in this position must have the ability to use a computer, photocopier, and telephone.  The person is required to sit for long periods, reach with hands and arms, use hands and fingers to grasp and relocate objects, lift up to 15 pounds, and type on a keyboard.  In addition, the person must be able to speak clearly, hear conversations spoken at a normal conversational level, and have good vision to see a computer monitor and distinguish the nature of objects.   This position requires travel, primarily in Minneapolis and the surrounding metropolitan area.

This is a .53 position and the salary range is $30,000-$35,000.
