Graven, Becker Awards winners celebrated at MSBA Assembly meeting

Six distinguished legal professionals were honored with awards at the quarterly meeting of the MSBA Assembly on April 20.

The MSBA presented the David Graven Public Service Award to Former Chief Justice Kathleen Blatz.  Chief Justice Blatz has been committed to public service since her graduation from law school in 1984, serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives and working in the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office prior to being named to the bench. Since retiring from the Minnesota Supreme Court, she has continued to serve—as the special master during the Minnesota government shutdown in 2011; a member of the Governor’s Task Force on the Protection of Children; and acting as interim chair of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority.

At its Assembly meeting on Friday 4/20, the MSBA Legal Assistance to the Disadvantaged Committee presented its annual Bernard P. Becker awards for outstanding legal work on behalf of low-income clients. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, the MSBA was able to name two recipients of the Legacy of Excellence Award this year. The winners (at left, l-r): Emerging Leader—Anne Applebaum (Immigrant Law Center); Legacy of Excellence—Irene Opsahl (Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid) and Gerald Kaluzny (Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services); Law Student—Mimi Levin (University of St. Thomas); Advocate (at right)—Ruth Ruch (Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota).
