Meet Amanda Heinrichs-Milburn: ‘I saw a need for an outstate voice’

You currently serve on the MSBA Outstate Section council. Tell us about your involvement on the council and any projects or initiatives you’re working on.

Amanda Heinrichs-Milburn

I saw that there was a need for an outstate voice at St. Thomas, so I founded a student group, the Outstate Practice Cooperative, during my first year at St. Thomas with a few fellow 1Ls. We were able to coordinate with the Outstate Section to form a student liaison position to serve on the council and the student organization board. Right now, I am coordinating a clerk program for outstate firms. We have 1L & 2L students interested in working outstate submit their resumes, writing samples, and a geographic preference if they have one.

We will be posting these on the Greater MN Legal Network Community on mnbar.org for the firms participating in the program. We require the firms to provide at least six weeks of work (over the summer), at least three experiences (write a memo, court experience, etc.), at least $12/hour, and to provide or to help find housing for the student during their time at the clerkship. We hope to have interviews scheduled the week of March 19.

I want to implement this program for the benefit of both students and firms. Many firms are concerned with retention, as well as the cost of training an associate who will leave after two years. A program that takes place in the summer gives students a taste of outstate practice to see if it fits for them, and firms have the opportunity to train a clerk without the worry of whether they will stick around or not. We are still looking for firms to participate, so they can email me (at hein5506@stthomas.edu) if they are interested in participating.

What are your aspirations upon graduation?

I hope to work as a judicial clerk, or in a small to midsize firm somewhere in southwest Minnesota. I am open as to the area that I practice in, but I’m most interested in estate planning, elder law, real estate, and family law.

How is being a bar association member worthwhile?

The legal community is a welcoming community in my experience, but being a bar member has helped me to facilitate relationships I would have never had the opportunity to build if I was not a bar association member. Not to mention the benefits that come with being a member—Fastcase and the document forms have been a huge help to me both in my law school experience and as a law clerk.

AMANDA HEINRICHS-MILBURN is a 3L at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. A native of Estherville, Iowa, a small town near the Iowa/Minnesota border, she graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa with a B.A. in psychology.
