Senior Attorney-Intellectual Property

Due to growth and customer demand we are currently recruiting for a Senior Attorney-Intellectual Property to join our team in Shakopee, MN. JOB SUMMARY: Meet the IP needs of the business by providing a full range of IP services and counseling to assigned business clients, and building and maintaining a portfolio of patents and other IP that advance the technical and commercial interests of the company. It is contemplated that this role would engage across several of our businesses and technologies and would at least initially be focused on managing the patent portfolio, including interfacing with outside counsel and the business to maximize the value of the portfolio. The position will be located in Shakopee, Minnesota. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES: ” Manages domestic and foreign patent applications of assigned businesses ” Works closely with research and development teams to identify new inventions ” Directs or performs patentability studies for new inventions ” Manages outside counsel for the preparation and filing of new patent applications ” Develops worldwide filing and prosecution strategy for patent applications ” Maximizes IP return on investment for IP assets, including breadth and diversity of coverage and consideration of third party design-around possibilities ” Undertakes various risk assessment studies relating to intellectual property aspects of our business activities, new product plans, and commercial and technical strategies. ” Directs and evaluates freedom-to-operate studies ” Analyzes third party patents and patent applications ” Works with outside counsel to obtain infringement and validity opinions as necessary ” Provides counseling and training on IP issues ” Advises R&D on IP strategy for research programs and product candidates ” Educates R&D and product management personnel on IP topics ” Reviews Company publications and presentations for IP content and disclosures ” Provides litigation, agreement, and other transactional support as required ” Carries out transactional activities as assigned including drafting and negotiation of joint development agreements, sponsored research agreements, license agreements, valuation agreements, and/or IP related supply agreements. ” Works with in-house corporate attorneys on IP aspects of agreements ” Supports patent assertion, challenges and litigation efforts as appropriate QUALIFICATIONS: ” A completed Bachelor’s Degree in related curriculum and JD or equivalent degree ” Electrical Engineering or Physics undergraduate degree is preferred ” 5-9 Years of Related Experience as licensed lawyer in a law firm or legal department setting ” Licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction of residence ” At least five years of patent law experience including preparation and prosecution ” Excellent drafting skills with keen attention to detail ” Excellent verbal/written communications skills ” Strong organizational and negotiation skills ” Ability to work independently with limited supervision required ” Domestic and international travel required ” Ability to work effectively with and manage outside legal counsel Please send resume to erin.ruff@commscope.com
