Nova Classical Academy, a St. Paul charter school, has won the state title in MSBA’s 29th season of the High School Mock Trial Tournament. This is Nova’s fifth year in the competition—and second championship title in three years. With 200 Upper School students, Nova often fields five or six teams per mock trial season. “At Nova, we know that a classical education teaches children the art of learning and trains their minds to think well,” said Dr. Susan Whalen, who coordinates the mock trial program for the school.
“MSBA’s High School Mock Trial Program provides a really fun and concrete opportunity for the students to test the precepts of classical public speaking, logic, argumentation, and dialectic they learn as part of normal instruction at Nova. Rigorous, sustained participation in mock trial actually makes our students more intensely engaged and stronger at all they do in school, and is a joyful and energizing part of everyday life there.”
Good luck to Nova Classical Academy as they represent Minnesota at Nationals in May. To learn more about the program or to volunteer, please visit www.mnbar.org or contact Kim Basting at (612) 278-6306.
